Tips for becoming a better writer

Writing is rewarding and interesting, whether you’re doing it as a pastime or a career but, especially when you’re starting out, it can be hard to know how to improve. Don’t worry too much about this, as even the greatest authors of all time had to start somewhere. In fact, you may get inspiration from reading the stories behind famous authors who struggled early on. As with any other skill, writing takes plenty of practice and a willingness to keep going even when things seem tough. Spur yourself on by imagining yourself in the future, and being thankful that you persevered with your writing.

Finding inspiration online

An excellent and easy way to improve your writing is to look online for articles on similar subjects. Choose a phrase that’s related to what you want to write about, then search for that and read the pages that come up in the results list. So, if you want to learn how to write online guides, you can look at existing examples. For example, let’s say you want to write about online bingo. Make sure you stick to the subject, as guides may need to be written differently for different topics.

Work out a routine

Stephen King writes every day, and this is a good example to follow. Find somewhere you feel comfortable and won’t be disturbed, and go there to write each time. It can help to simply write out whatever comes to mind – nobody else will see it, so don’t get nervous about quality. Your writing quality is likely to improve anyway with more practice. Reading your writing aloud is also handy, especially if you’re aiming for a specific voice. Finally, think about your audience. An article for kids will need to be in simpler language than one aimed at adults.
